Year 2 Day 97 - Oswego, NY

Today is Monday, July 2nd and we're here in Oswego getting ready to cross the big lake - Ontario.  We left Little Falls on Saturday morning arriving at Sylvan Beach in the early afternoon.  What a wild scene that was!  It was party time for all the young people and quite busy and noisy.  We parked alongside the free dock and were glad we got there early as within no time at all, the dock was full.  There was an amusement park close to this dock and much activity.  People were walking by the boat constantly and I tried sitting out on the sundeck with a book and it was impossible.  Every few minutes somebody would ask me a question about the boat, our trip, etc.

We left Sunday morning to cross Lake Oswego which is 20 miles across and it was a beautiful day and we had a great crossing with no problems.  We arrived at Brewerton and decided to stay at Winter Harbor Marina.  This is a facility with 2 huge boat sheds for people wanting to store their boats for the winter season in a heated warehouse.  We actually ran into a couple from Port Lavaca Texas - Stan and Susie Marshall on their 36' Monk called The Pearl.

This lock looks as if you'll run into the bridge
however you're lowered about 27' and
clear this bridge

We plan to leave Oswego tomorrow morning about 5:30 AM in order to cross Lake Ontario - a huge lake.  Fortunately we're leaving with another boat heading to the same destination - Trenton in Canada!  We'll have to clear customs, declare our liquor on board, etc.  Another looper I know had to pay $36 in taxes for the liquor they were carrying.  Hopefully, that won't happen to us.  We think we'll arrive about 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon.  The winds are light tomorrow which is why we're leaving after only arriving here about 3:00.

We left the Erie Canal earlier today and entered the Oswego Canal leading us here.  The Erie Canal from Waterford to the Oswego has 22 locks and the Oswego has 7 locks for a total of 29 locks that we've gone through.  We've done pretty well going through most of these locks but today the lines did a job on my arms.  I tried to hold on when the wind was pushing us away from the lock wall.  Hopefully I'll do better in Canada.
